Structural Realism and Structural Empiricism: A Case Study in Quantifier VarianceChinese Full Text

Otávio Bueno (Department of Philosophy, University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL 33124, USA)

Abstract: Quantifier variance is the doctrine according to which there is no best language with which to describe the world. In this paper, I examine the implications of this doctrine to views about science that emphasize the importance of structural considerations, such as structural realism and structural empiricism. It is argued that significant problems emerge for structural realism in the context of quantifier variance. No such problems, however, are faced by structural empiricism.
