The Unknown Bibliographic Achievements of Sima QianChinese Full Text
Wang Jingui;
Abstract: In the traditional Chinese culture, bibliography is regarded as a notable doctrine. However, for certain reasons, Sima Qian, one of the most famous historians in China, was not given acknowledgment in bibliographic field. Many facts indicate that the book of Shih Chi is an unprecedented tacit bibliography. Shih Chi implied the theories and the organization of entries in bibliography, differentiated and analyzed the dividing lines of academic achievements by pre-Qin thinkers, revealed the life stories of representative figure, examined the academic sources and courses of the scholars, enumerated writings and academic success, and revealed the contents of documents by the method of coreference. Shih Chi has had a significant influence on Record of Art and Culture, History of Han Dynasty, both of which presented books and documents under the background of national histories, attached importance to the analyses of academic schools and the internal relations. Today, we should recognize the fundamental and important contributions of Sima Qian to bibliography. 8 refs.
