Abstract: Energy management is very important for improving fuel economy, driving performance and reducing emissions of hybrid electric vehicles（HEVs）. We give an overview of the progress and the status quo of the energy management problem of HEVs. Various definitions of the energy management problem are introduced from different views. A variety of control methods are analyzed and compared with each other. Finally, some discussions about potential directions and challenges for future research on the energy management problem of hybrid electric vehicles are presented.
