Abstract: In the surface environment, iron oxide minerals can promote microbial metabolism as a terminal electron donor/acceptor,environmental battery,or a conductor for direct interspecies electron transfer, and so on.This paper introduced the up-to-date studies about molecular mechanisms and influencing factors on the interaction between iron oxide minerals and c-type cytochromes of extracellular electron transfer pathways, including the binding of cytochromes onto the surface of iron oxide minerals, effects of mineral properties on interfacial electron transfer, and main environment variables controlling extracellular electron transfer, etc.
