Abstract: Hachuring is the use of short lines on maps to shade or to indicate slopes and their degree and direction. The method first appeared in European maps at the beginning of 18th century, and was standardized by the Austrian Johann Georg Lehmann. The process was then transmitted to China through maps and books. The first hachure map made by Chinese appeared in the Tongzhi reign( 1861 1875),but lacked standardization; the first map to use normative Hachuring appeared in the Hu Dian Yu Tu.... More
