Abstract: Objective To determine the effects of lindley eupatorium herb(LEH) extract on the vascular inflammation in rabbit model with atherosclerosis. Methods A total of 36 rabbits were randomly divided into 6 groups, normal control group(treated with normal diet),model group, positive control group and LEH groups.Rabbit model with atherosclerosis were established by high fat diet. The animals from the positive control group was treated with 2.2 mg/kg simvastatin which was mixed in the diet, and those of LEH groups were treated with LEH at 8.34,4.17 and 2.08 g/kg respectively. The serum levels of blood fat,C-reactive protein(CRP) and NO were detected in 6 and 10 weeks. The plaque area and thickness of aorta were measured with morphometry analysis when rabbits were killed after 10 weeks treatment. The damaged segments of abdominal artery were harvested for mRNA expression of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1(VCAM-1) by RT-PCR.Results Compared with normal group, the serum level of blood fat and plague area in the model groups were significantly increased(at the 10th week,TC: 1.39±0.23 vs 46.30±6.73 mmol/L,P<0.05;the ratio of lipid plaque area:0% vs 89.61±7.85 %,P<0.05);the levels of CRP in the serum and mRNA expression of VCAM-l in the tissue of medication administration teams were significantly decreased(5.15±1.42,5.69±1.45,6.36±1.43 vs 8.34±1.85 mg/L,P<0.05).NO content were significantly increased(117.41±9.61,87.87±13.47,64.34±11.18 vs 47.29±8.29 μmol/L,P<0.05).Conclusion LEH exerts protective and therapeutic effect on atherosclerosis by decreasing the level of specific markers of inflammation.
